Mambo Lead |
To start mambo, push lady’s right arm
gently back using left hand. Do not
maintain the pressure, as she needs to step forward on 3! Use the frame of the hold to gently
encourage the lady through the remaining steps. |

Rumba Lead |
On 1, use the heel of the hand on
lady’s left shoulder to encourage the step to her right. Once underway, stop pushing with the heel
of hand and on 2, pull gently back on shoulder with fingers to check move to
side. Use the frame of the hold to gently encourage the lady through the
remaining steps. |

Cuban Break Lead |
Push lady’s right hand down to hip
height, man’s fingers on top and thumb below, palms facing down. Pushing slightly apart encourages the steps
backward. |

The man must start his lead early. It needs be underway on the 1 beat if
the lady is to have any chance of following.
2.
The man’s lead relies upon having a gentle
resistance to push against. Loose limbs
and swinging arm or hand movements are not helpful!
3.
It’s easier to lead and react to leads
if the partners are close together. It
also looks better. Remember, Salsa is a
contact sport!
4.
Once the man has given the lead, the
lady should continue with that move until the man gives a new lead.
5.
There is no such thing as a lead
for the ladies!
